Kanban is a management technique first developed in retail supply chains for the purpose of limiting on-shelf and warehouse inventory and reducing lead times of perishable goods to market.  Kanban enables a “pull” signaling system, where the production of new goods is closely regulated by the consumption of current stock.  This method was famously adapted by Toyota for the “just-in-time” assembly of automobiles, and in recent years has been expanded to cover workflow management in general.

Corey Ladas began experimenting with software development pull systems at Microsoft in the early 2000’s, and later collaborated with David Anderson to further develop kanban methods for Lean software development.

Kanban is easy to learn and easy to implement. It can enable a framework for your team to implement continuous improvement and to significantly change the culture to one of empowerment, delegation and innovation driven from the individual contributors. Team members feeling empowered and accountable for organizational performance, and safe through a management team encouraging of innovation and tolerant to failure of ideas, will greatly increase the pace of change and the performance of your organization.
