Jim’s Long List of Social Media Holdings
Jim’s background includes high tech, urban planning and cognitive psychology. He has been involved in the creation of community, from small groups to metropolises, since 1989. Much of his community focus has been in the creation of applications and processes that increase communication and focus attention. Jim’s other focus has been the building blocks of community and the barriers to it. He has worked with government at all levels and major corporations to untangle culture from bureaucracy. After leading a transportation technology practice for a top 50 American Consulting Engineering company, Jim started Gray Hill Solutions ‑ a company dedicated to re‑creating the information infrastructure of government.
Gray Hill started as an Agile shop, extending agile principles with careful tool selection. Made up mostly of contractors, the Gray Hill team is global and changes with each project. Jim oversaw the development of an agile toolkit that incorporated social media ideals of openness, communication and usability. He created methodologies to select and tailor tools to the culture of the group using them.
While running Gray Hill, Jim joined forces with Howard Rheingold and Stanford’s Institute for the Future to create Cooperation Commons ‑ an open source multidisciplinary effort to study cooperation in all its forms. He also joined with Dion Hinchcliffe to write the book “Real World Ajax”, a technical book about deploying what has become a primary piece of Web 2.0 infrastructure.
